2018 was an amazing year for the local beer scene and 2019 is shaping up to be just as exciting. As we all enjoy and recover from the holidays, it’s nice to remind ourselves of what made the headlines.
As we reach the holiday season once more, the selection of beers on the shelf and on tap start to remind us of the rich, decadent flavours that this time of year provides.
As we get deeper into fall and closer to the holiday season, beer events start to wind down with a few important exceptions.
The trophies haven’t even been handed out before you hear the comments: “How did that beer win? So and so’s beer is way better than that one. What are the judges thinking?”
One of the best parts of the seasonal change is the anticipation of new beers on the shelves that fit the changes in temperature. At this time of year, harvest time, one of the more anticipated styles coming are fresh-hopped beers.

Hops have been commonly used in beer for nearly a thousand years, but there has been a big shift in how they’re used with the growth in craft brewing.
As the weather warms up (hopefully), there is always a shift in the types of beer you see on the shelf.
