With a slower month ahead while breweries prepare for summer, and everyone having recovered by now, it just seems appropriate to take a look back at Victoria Beer Week 2017, and showcase some of the highlights of the week.
With so many great events, it’s hard to pick a few that stood out above the rest. All About the Wood was great for big beer lovers, and had so many beers that were perfectly suited for the 4 oz. sample size.
The venue, at the Roundhouse at Bayview Place, was so perfectly suited to the event as well. Expect this to become a regular event going forward with the response they had. The second Friday Night Casks was just fantastic as well. Brewers pulled out all the stops and brought some of their best beers for what was a nice unofficial wrap-up to the week at the Victoria Public Market.
There were a lot of beers served during the week, and while all were enjoyed, not all were as memorable as these. Personally, the Black Braggot from Gladstone Brewing in Courtenay was the highlight of the week, it might have also been one of the biggest beers of the week in style as well. Fuggles and Warlock’s Fig & Plum sour disappeared almost immediately, which is no surprise as it’s fresh plum flavour was intensely bright and fruity. As for locally, and this one you can actually find on store shelves right now, Swans’ Venerator Doppelbock is a nice showcase of malty richness people don’t usually expect from a lager, but then, this isn’t a usual lager.
